Inconel 800

Inconel 800 is a family of high-performance alloys manufactured by the Special Metals Corporation Group. The alloy has a wide range of applications and its ability to withstand extreme temperatures and corrosion makes it ideal for industries such as oil and gas, aerospace engineering, power generation, automotive and medical device manufacturing.

Inconel 800H is an improved version of the original Inconel 800 alloy that has been modified by adding 0.05–0.1% aluminium to increase its resistance to oxidation & carburization attack at elevated temperature levels. The addition of aluminium also enhances the alloy’s resistance against stress-corrosion cracking in certain media like sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid solutions.

Inconel 800 Chemical Composition

Inconel 800 is a nickel-chromium alloy that is widely used in high-temperature applications due to its impressive strength & corrosion resistance. Alloy 800h the chemical composition consists of approximately 8-10% nickel, 18-21% chromium, 34% iron, and various other elements including manganese, titanium, copper, silicon, carbon, sulfur, aluminium, and cobalt. The chemical composition of Inconel 800 offers good resistance to oxidation and carburization as well as excellent creep rupture strength at temperatures up to 816°C (1500°F).

Physical and Mechanical Properties of Inconel 800

Incoloy 800 has many desirable properties, including high ductility and good thermal conductivity. Its density is approximately 8.2g/cm3 and its melting point is around 1300-1390°C (2400-2550°F). This makes it ideal for use in applications that require good heat-resistant properties such as furnace parts or gas turbines.

Thermal conductivity is approximately 70 W/mK which allows for good heat transfer between components without significant energy loss over time. And Incoloy 800 exhibits excellent resistance to corrosion in a variety of environments including sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid and nitric acid.

Incoloy 800 provides superior tensile strength & yield properties in applications such as industrial furnaces and chemical processing equipment. Tensile strength refers to the amount of force applied before an object will begin to deform. This property measures the strength of a material’s ability to resist breaking or deforming when stretched or pulled under tension.

Incoloy 800 has exceptional tensile strength with a maximum strain rate that can reach up to 80 ksi at room temperature. This means that it can resist stretching much better than other metals at elevated temperatures. Yield strength indicates how much an object can be stressed before it begins to permanently deform or change shape. Incoloy 800 has excellent yield with a minimum value that reaches up to 50-55 ksi at room temperature. This makes it a great choice for applications where elevated temperatures are involved because it will retain its shape even when significant amounts of force are applied.

Elongation measures how much an object can stretch before finally breaking apart or completely changing shape permanently. Incoloy 800 exhibits excellent elongation values ranging from about 30% – 40%. This means that it can stretch quite significantly before finally giving way making it ideal for applications involving extreme temperatures and corrosive environments where regular stretching may occur due to thermal expansion and contraction cycles

Heat Treatment of Inconel 800

INCOLOY® 800 series of alloys are typically subjected to Annealing and Solutionizing processes – two heat treatment techniques that help enhance the mechanical properties of metals. In the case of Incoloy 800, these processes improve the alloy’s strength & resistance to high-temperature corrosion by removing internal stresses and refining its microstructure.

Annealing entails heating a metal above the critical temperature, holding it for an extended period at a specific temperature (called soak time), and then cooling it slowly back to room temperature to remove internal stresses. During this process, grains in the metal expand and contract, which helps to refine its microstructure. This increases the metal’s strength & ductility, making it less susceptible to cracking or breaking under stress.

Solutionizing is a similar process that involves heating a metal until its solid constituents are dissolved into a single-phase solution. This molten solution is then rapidly cooled with water or air quenching, resulting in an even more refined microstructure than what Annealing alone can achieve. Solutionizing can also help increase the hardness and wear resistance of metals like Incoloy 800.

Corrosion Resistance of Inconel 800

Inconel® 800 series of alloys is known for its corrosion resistance, making it ideal for use in highly corrosive environments. The high chromium content of the alloys provides excellent protection, to oxidation and carburization, even at extremely elevated temperatures. Its nickel-iron base allows it to retain these qualities over a wide range of temperatures

Incoloy 800 alloy also exhibits superior resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking and sulphide stress corrosion cracking, making it a popular choice for many industrial applications. It also has good tensile strength & can withstand pressure better than other stainless steel materials. This makes it perfect for applications in boilers, heat exchangers, refinery equipment, and pressure vessels. Incoloy 800 is also non-magnetic and has good weldability properties, which make it easy to join with other metals for fabrication purposes.

INCOLOY® 800 series of alloys provide excellent resistance to oxidation and high-temperature environments, helping make them an ideal choice for components that are subjected to such extreme conditions. Due to their chromium and nickel content, these alloys have an increased resistance to carburization and other forms of high-temperature corrosion. Incoloy 800, one of the most popular inconel alloys in the INCOLOY® 800 series, exhibits superior creep properties at temperatures up to 2250°F (1232°C).

Incoloy 800 is an alloy of nickel, chromium, and iron that has excellent corrosion resistance in various acids, alkaline solutions, and aqueous solutions. In particular, Incoloy 800 alloy boasts remarkable resistance to nitric acid and sulfuric acid. In addition to its corrosion resistance property, it also offers excellent strength at elevated temperatures up to 1400°C (2550°F).

Applications of Incoloy 800

Incoloy 800 offers superior performance for many industrial uses over other alloys with similar chemical compositions by providing higher strength under higher temperature conditions than their counterparts while maintaining its excellent corrosion-resistant properties. These features combined with its cost-effectiveness compared to alternative materials on the market makes it a highly sought-after material for use in various industries worldwide.

Incoloy 800 can be used in applications where exposure to extreme temperatures or corrosive atmospheres is expected such as chemical processing plants and petrochemical refineries. It is also commonly used for heat exchanger in nuclear power plants due to its great thermal stability. Incoloy 800 alloy can even be used in nuclear fuel cladding components due to its very low neutron absorption cross section which prevents it from altering the performance or reaction rates of the fuel being used.

Incoloy 800h (also known as Alloy 800 uns 08800) is an austenitic nickel-iron-chromium alloy that has excellent resistance to oxidation, carburization, and other forms of high-temperature corrosion. It is particularly well suited for aerospace and automotive applications due to its ability to maintain its strength & integrity even in the most extreme temperatures.
