Incoloy 800 exhibits excellent elongation values ranging from about 30% – 40%. This means that it can stretch quite significantly before finally giving way making it ideal for applications involving extreme temperatures and corrosive environments where regular stretching may occur due to thermal expansion and contraction cycles

Heat Treatment of Inconel 800

INCOLOY® 800 series of alloys are typically subjected to Annealing and Solutionizing processes – two heat treatment techniques that help enhance the mechanical properties of metals. In the case of Incoloy 800, these processes improve the alloy’s strength & resistance to high-temperature corrosion by removing internal stresses and refining its microstructure.

Annealing entails heating a metal above the critical temperature, holding it for an extended period at a specific temperature (called soak time), and then cooling it slowly back to room temperature to remove internal stresses. During this process, grains in the metal expand and contract, which helps to refine its microstructure. This increases the metal’s strength & ductility, making it less susceptible to cracking or breaking under stress.

Solutionizing is a similar process that involves heating a metal until its solid constituents are dissolved into a single-phase solution. This molten solution is then rapidly cooled with water or air quenching, resulting in an even more refined microstructure than what Annealing alone can achieve. Solutionizing can also help increase the hardness and wear resistance of metals like Incoloy 800.
